A routine method for the estimation of serum protein-bound iodine.

چکیده
A method for the determination of serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) is presented. Chioric acid digestion is carried out in a single tube as described by other authors. In order to shorten the period when close supervision is necessary, the digestion process has been reduced to 1 hour and the estimation completed within 4 hours. The method has been modified to make it a more manageable routine procedure for either single or multiple estimations of PBI. To overcome complications involved in temperature control, the final estimation of inorganic iodide by the catalytic reduction of Ce+4 to Ce+3 is carried out at room temperature. The value of this method as a thyroid function test is assessed in 125 cases.

Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine
Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...
متن کاملAutomated method for the estimation of serum protein-bound iodine following alkaline incineration.
A method is described for the estimation of serum protein-bound iodine using alkaline incineration and an automated technique for the estimation of iodine in the ash. Pretreatment of the serum with an anion exchange resin avoids the need for precipitation and washing of the protein. The method is accurate, reproducible, and simple to perform.
متن کاملEvaluation of discordant laboratory data in patients with thyroid disorders.
The usefulness of the various tests of thyroid function has been evaluated over a three-year period. It is concluded that an uptake test and estimation of the serum protein-bound radioactive iodine (PB (131)I), supplemented as required by the protein-bound iodine (PBI), remain the best routine tests of thyroid function. Forty-five patients who gave discordant results on these tests over this pe...
متن کاملProtein-bound iodine of the blood serum in leprosy.
The protein-bound iodine of the blood serum has acquired clinical importance in recent years because of the development of chemical methods for the detection and quantitative estimation of minute quantities of organic iodine in the blood. Its determination is of value because its concentration usually parallels that of the circulating thyroid hormone. In chronic infections with fever, and in ch...
متن کاملLabeling of Human Serum Albumin with Stable Isotope of Bromine; an in Vitro Study
Background: Possibility to trace-label albumin with isotopes results in information concerning its synthesis, breakdown, and distribution in the intra and extra cellular spaces. The iodination of albumin is a widespread procedure used in scientific studies. Bromine not only is more reactive and less expensive than iodine, but bonds more easily with many elements. Therefore, it could be a suitab...
